Pollution prevention and good housekeeping for municipal operations
Various activities performed in our community contribute to stormwater pollution. Proper maintenance of the City’s MS4 is needed to reduce the potential for pollutants to be exposed to stormwater runoff. These programs are often called source controls, as they capture potential pollutants at their source before they enter area receiving streams. Enhancement of our good housekeeping practices is a priority in our stormwater management program. Our primary areas of concern include but are not limited to:
Litter pickup
Re-evaluation of our street sweeping program to include a more rigid cleaning schedule. The goal will be to include the cleaning of all major corridors on a bi-monthly basis.
Storage of deicing salt or sand piles
Standard operating procedures for spill prevention & clean up during fueling operations.
BMP’s for vehicle maintenance areas
Minimizing the use of pesticides & fertilizers for municipal uses
Proper disposal of animal waste
Development of a catch basin cleaning program to include cleaning of every inlet two times per year. Annual evaluation of this program will be conducted through tracking of number of basins cleaned and amount of debris removed.
Development of a storm sewer cleaning program to prioritize inspection & cleaning of storm sewers that become blocked with debris and no longer properly drain. Annual evaluation of this program through tracking of length of sewers cleaned & amount of debris removed.
